Christmas in Taizé

On the evening of 24th December, the brothers, the young volunteers, the few pilgrims staying in Taizé and many people from the surrounding region gathered in the Church of Reconciliation at 9pm for the Christmas celebration. At the end of the Eucharist everyone went out in front of the church to sing in front of the life-sized nativity scene. Despite the cold, it was a joyful occasion, celebrating Christmas night together and singing together side-by-side with the donkey, sheep and chickens bringing the crib to life. On Christmas morning two buses left the hill early in the morning taking a big group to Strasbourg for the European Meeting.

On the way to Strasbourg

All over Europe thousands of young people are also preparing to set off for Strasbourg. Today over 1000 volunteers are arriving, who will help to welcome the almost 20 000 others coming on the 28th December. Together with the young people of the host regions of Alsace (France) and Ortenau (Germany) 30 000 will take part in this 36th European stage in the pilgrimage of trust. All the participants will be accommodated by the families of the region.
Those unable to go to Strasbourg can follow the meeting through the Taizé website where you will find :
• The detailed programme of the meeting
• Following the prayers live on-line
• Brother Alois’ address given to the young people each evening during the prayer
• Photos from the meeting
• The meeting day-by-day with stories and feedback from the young participants
• Messages of encouragement sent to the participants of the meetings.
At the initiative of the Catholic and Protestant Churches of Alsace, a studio, open each day from 2pm – 6pm, will be made available for the young people to record video messages. More information can be found at http://live.taize-str.eu.

Brother Alois’ Four Proposals to "search for the visible communion of all who love Christ"

The letter “Towards a New Solidarity” continues to be the basis for the common journey leading us by stages to 2015. It commits us for the year 2014 to “seeking visible communion among all who love Christ.” The “Four Proposals” of Brother Alois to young adults and pastoral leaders to join in this search are now published on the website. In this text, the prior of Taizé writes :
"On some occasions, such as international meetings, this community of friendship becomes visible. But these events are occasional. In every place, a portion of this large community (that is the church) can be found, even if a very poor one. It is not possible to live faith all by ourselves. Faith is born when there is an experience of communion, when we discover that Christ is the source of an unrestricted unity."

A journey through Mexico

For six weeks, one of the brothers and a young volunteer have been visiting several cities in the central and northern part of Mexico. They had the chance to meet young Mexicans who have been in Taizé over the last few years, to pray with them and to share together using the letter "Towards a new solidarity". One of the prayers took place in Guadalajara in the Santa Cecilia district, where the very first meeting organised by the community outside of Taizé took place in 1974. In several towns they met with groups of young people preparing a new stage in the pilgrimage of trust, which will take place next year from 1st to 4th May in Mexico City. The young volunteer is staying in Mexico to continue the pilgrimage, he has just spent Christmas with the indigenous communities in the south of the country, in the state of Chiapas.

Prayer

Jesus, at Christmas only a few recognized in you the one sent from God. You were poor and hidden. Give us the Holy Spirit; may he change our hearts and our way of seeing so that we may be able to discern God’s treasures today in the simple events of our existences.
