Taizé: At the end of the summer, the meetings continue

The busy summer weeks are now over. With smaller numbers of young participants, the international meetings still continue from week to week. Weather problems made life a bit more complicated in late August, mainly due to a storm and a strong hailstorm, which fortunately did not cause any accidents.
Several church leaders recently visited Taizé, including the Catholic bishops of Bamberg in Germany, Archbishop Ludwig Schick, and Soissons in France, Hervé Giraud. From Germany, the community also welcomed the president of the Protestant Church in Germany, Präses Nikolaus Schneider, as well as the Lutheran bishops Markus Dröge from Berlin, visiting for a few hours, and Jochen Bohl, who came from Dresden with a large group of young people. From Britain, bishops from the Anglican dioceses of Coventry, Hereford, Manchester, Southwark and Winchester came to visit.
Another important visit was that of Bishop Servilien Nzakamwita, Catholic Bishop of Byumba in Rwanda, in charge of youth ministry in his country. He stayed in Taizé for several days, a few weeks before the international meeting of young adults to be held in Kigali from 14-18 November. During his stay, he met with the brothers, the volunteers, and the young people from Africa who were in Taizé this summer.
As stated by Brother Alois in one of the meetings that took place every Thursday evening in the Church of Reconciliation, “In Taizé we have, week after week throughout the year, the experience that Christ can bring us together beyond all borders. This communion is a miracle that never ceases to amaze us. It is by living such a miracle that the reconciled Church could become the nucleus of a universal communion.”

Taizé: Televised Eucharist

Sunday, September 9, the celebration of the Eucharist is being broadcast live from Taizé on France 2, as part of the program “The Day of the Lord,” in the presence of the community of brothers and a thousand young people together this week on the hill. The program, which begins at 10:30, will also include four short reports presenting the community and the welcome of the young and a live interview with Brother Alois. During the celebration, a meditation will be given by Brother Alois.

Towards a new solidarity: visits and a new section

Initiated in Berlin by Brother Alois, the journey “towards a new solidarity” was marked this summer in Taizé by several workshops dealing with the topic. Some brought together young visitors and volunteers, others were animated by outsiders who spoke about their commitment in the European Parliament or the Global Fund to fight against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. In the most recent one, Jérôme Vignon, chairman of the “Semaines Sociales de France,” raised especially these two questions: “Must generosity come to save solidarity?” and also “How can young Europeans give new life to solidarity among nations?”
Furthermore, a new section of the Taizé website has been put on line. It will include include news published at regular intervals, testimonies from young people on specific themes, proposals for praying together and for small-group sharing.

Nairobi: “Searching by ourselves and sharing”

Before going to Kigali in early September, the Taizé brothers in Nairobi hosted in August 130 young people from five East African countries (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda) for two retreats. Many young Kenyans, leaders in their dioceses, attended. The astonishment of a participant is proof of the novelty of the experience of silence, mediation and group Bible sharing “I thought I was going to a retreat, but it was just the opposite! Usually at a retreat we listen to lectures morning and evening. This time we had to search by ourselves and to share with others....”

Rome: Preparations continue for the European meeting

In two weeks, the team preparing the European meeting will be active in the city of Rome. Each day, a daily prayer will bring together brothers, sisters of St. Andrew, young volunteers and the Romans who wish to take part.
Already in different European countries, young people are also preparing to take part in this meeting. On the Taizé website information has been published on the preparation and online registration. To present this stage of the pilgrimage of trust on earth, a slideshow has also been published and translated into different languages.

Commented Bible passage: “Keeping Our Eyes on Christ”

Each month, a biblical text is commented on the website, with some questions for sharing in small groups. The latest text speaks about Luke 4, 16-30: “This short account of Jesus’ visit to his hometown is disturbing: how could he stand such a change? At the beginning people are amazed at him, and then all at once the crowd seems to turn into a lynch-mob. The people are all waiting for the Messiah (Luke 3:15), who was to come in order to create communion with God and among human beings.”

Agenda

  • Italy. The weekend of September 14-16, hundreds of young people from all over Italy will meet with two brothers in Mantua, a historic city in the plain of the Po, for a gathering of the “pilgrimage of trust on earth,” which will begin preparations in Italy for the European meeting in Rome.
  • Ukraine. Brother Alois will be in Kiev for a week in September. With two other brothers, he will lead a meeting of young people on Friday 21 and Saturday 22. Young people will pray in different churches in the city and take part in a bible introduction and workshops. Brother Alois will then give a talk in Kiev during an international theological congress on the theme of testimony.
  • Finland. At the invitation of the Lutheran, Orthodox and Catholic Churches of the country, a stage in the pilgrimage of trust will take place in Helsinki from 28-30 September; Brother Alois will be present.

Prayer

We praise you, Jesus Christ, for the communion of your Church. Beyond all boundaries you gather us together. Keep us all in your love and make us builders of your peace.
