Taizé: In February, a Lenten Rhythm

Several hundred Portuguese young people were in Taizé for the beginning of LentOn Wednesday evening, marking the beginning of this period of journeying towards Easter, each person present had a sign of the cross marked on their forehead with ashes and was invited to "put their trust in the Gospel". The altar is dressed in purple during Lent time and there are no "Alleluia"s sung during the prayer so that at Easter they will ring out all the more. Special hymns for the season also help to enter into the spirit of expectancy.
This preparation time is not just spiritual: the volunteers and young visitors have been putting up the big tents ready to welcome the thousands expected for Holy Week.

Rome: After the Resignation of Pope Benedict

As Pope Benedict XVI comes to the end of his ministry, Brother Alois wrote a message and prayer to express his thanks to the Holy Father. It was all the more poignant after the common prayer celebrated together with him in Saint Peter’s Square on the 29th December last with 45 000 young people from various churches - one of the last public acts of worship of his pontificate.

Canterbury: Brother Alois at the Enthronement of the New Archbishop

Brother Alois will be in Canterbury on 21 March for the enthronement of the new Archbishop, Justin Welby. The relationship with his predecessor, Dr. Rowan Williams, was particularly warm, and he met the brothers on several occasions: in 2006 he gave a reflection during a prayer led by the Community in Westminster Abbey, while in 2009 Dr. Williams spent a few days in Taizé. More recently he has recorded a video to help young people prepare for a week a Taizé.

Istanbul: From the European Meeting, a Pilgrimage to the "New Rome"

After the Pilgrimage to Istanbul several young people from different countries and church backgrounds have written about some of their experiences. Stefan (from Germany) writes: "What an adventure! To go from the European Meeting in "Ancient Rome" on a pilgrimage to "New Rome", Constantinople, today Istanbul, a country, a city where it’s everything apart from obvious to be a Christian ... Maybe it’s exactly because of that that it was a strong sign for the local Christians that some of the brothers and a hundred young people from 25 countries and different church backgrounds came to pray together, meet together and celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord."

Beirut: A Brother at the Installation of the new Patriarch of Antioch

"It was an unexpected joy to be in Lebanon once again after having spent ten days there in last December. The invitation sent to the community by the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch to be present at the installation of the new Patriarch, John X, was an opportunity to express once more our solidarity with Christians from the Middle East.

Ranong : Visiting Burmese Immigrants in Thailand

The theme of New Solidarity makes us attentive to discovering signs of hope. The work of the ‘Jesuit Refugee Service’ is one such sign. One of their projects in Thailand is at Ranong, a small town in the south-east of the country, on the frontier with Myanmar; a town where thousands of Burmese come looking for work ...

Commented Bible Passage: "A City Beautiful Like No Other"

"At the end of the Book of Revelation, the very last book of the Bible, the author, John, describes a most extraordinary sight: first, a new heaven and a new earth appear to him, then a city descending from heaven. The vision, however startling, is not meant to horrify or impress. This is vision in a different sense. It is fresh perception, a new realization about God, about life and why we are here."

New Solidarity: Suggested Order for a Lenten Prayer Service

A suggested order of service for a time of common prayer "towards a new solidarity" during the season of Lent can be found on our website.

Prayer

On the road towards Easter, we would like to follow your light, Christ Jesus. And our darkness, we shouldn't fear. You, Christ, come to transfigure it.
