Taizé: The big summer meetings begin
Since the middle of June, the number of young people in Taizé has been steadily increasing each week. The meetings are very international with a great
diversity of origins among the participants. Volunteers from countries all over
the world have also been arriving over the last few weeks. There are some new
workshops on offer this summer, and others led by experts in their field
staying for a few days. Included in these we should mention the retired
Archbishop of Algiers, Mgr. Teissier, speaking about inter-religious dialogue;
Rabbi David from Israel, coming to take part in several young meetings;
Christoph Benn from the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria;
Philippe Lamberts, Member of the European Parliament; as well as doctors from
the region surrounding. Still other themes are in preparation.
Among visiting church dignitaries we have had the pleasure to
welcome the President of the Methodist Church in Benin, several national youth
chaplains from various African countries, the Archbishop of Dijon, France, the
Bishop of Magdeburg, Germany, several bishops from the Church of England and
five orthodox priests from Belarus, accompanying groups of young people.
Caribbean: Forthcoming stages in the Pilgrimage
of Trust
After the beautiful meeting in Mexico in May, which brought together 2000 young people from Mexico and
many other Latin American countries, a prayer will be held at the Cathedral of
Caguas, in Porto Rico on the 8 October. Then during the weekend of 10-12
October there will be prayers in 3 different cities in Haïti, a country which
suffers a lot from natural disasters and an unstable political situation, but
which does not lose hope.
On 14 and 15 October there will be a prayer in Matanzas, Cuba – it
will be the first time the community organises a prayer on the island. And
finally, on the weekend of 17 to 19 October the final stage will be a youth
meeting in Santo Domingo, capital of the Domincan Republic.
Latvia: Riga is getting ready to welcome the
September meeting
Preparation for the meeting in Riga is already well advanced, even
before the beginning of the summer holidays. Many families from different
church communities and parishes in Riga and the surrounding towns have offered
to welcome the pilgrims – all the participants should be accommodated in
families. A good mix of workshops is already beginning to take shape. You can register for the meeting on the website.
Short Bible Meditation: To believe for nothing?
Why do we suffer? Why do good and innocent people suffer so much?
These questions, as old as humankind, appear also in the Bible, notably in the
Book of Job... Although he is a foreigner, Job will reflect, talk and act like
a faithful Israelite. His story is a parable, a surprisingly up-to-date
reflection on the usefulness of being faithful to God. It does not give an
answer to the question of suffering, but it questions us about the reasons for
our faith. A short commentary of Job 1:1-21 has just been published on our website.
Towards a New Solidarity: Evening of prayer and
sharing
Seeking to walk along the path “towards a new solidarity”
suggested in Brother Alois’ Letter 2012-2015, groups of young people organise evenings of
prayer and sharing together. [Suggestions for such a evening for this summer]
2014 are now available on-line.
2015 in Taizé: Around the 12 May
Brother Roger was born on the 12 May 1915 in the Swiss village of
Provence. Next year, among the various events celebrating the hundredth year of his birth, the community invites the people
of the greater region surrounding Taizé - Dijon, Geneva, Lyon to come together
in Taizé on Sunday 10 May. Around 12 May, young people are invited to organize
a prayer wherever they live and to imagine an act of solidarity, in order to
recall the memory of Brother Roger and to put into practice his call to follow
Christ.
Prayer
Christ Jesus, you never force human conscience. You are meek and
humble of heart. In your communion we learn to accept other. And gratitude for
those you confide to our care is reawakened in our hearts.
