Rome: Brother Alois at the Synod of Bishops

From 7th to the 28th October, Brother Alois is taking part as a “special guest” in the Synod dedicated to reflecting about the “new evangelisation for transmitting the Christian faith”. The Synod brings over 250 bishops together in Rome from all over the world. Among those invited to speak will be the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams.

Taizé: Autumn rhythm on the hill

Throughout the autumn groups from Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands and Switzerland as well as from other European countries continue to take part in the meetings for a week or for a few days. A new brother, from France, entered the community, receiving the white prayer robe during the prayer one evening during September. And for several weeks an Orthodox monk from Belarus is staying with us in Taizé.
At the same time the work teams led by the young volunteers repair and put away all the things from the summer: the family quarter "Olinda" has been closed for the winter and a lot of the tents have been taken down. Making the most of the calmer period, the young volunteers staying for a year to help in the meetings spent some time reflecting together on the theme of hospitality as a reflection of universal solidarity.

Towards a New Solidarity: Sharing and Common Prayer

To help us continue looking “Towards a New Solidarity”, in Taizé and elsewhere, the website carries a suggested order of service for a common prayer linked to ideas for sharing in small groups. The theme for this season is “Peace to those who are far, peace to those who are near.”
During the next few months we would like the website to reflect on the path of the three years launched in Berlin by Brother Alois. Among the themes will be: welcoming refugees and migrants, meeting with believers of other religions, respect for ethnic minorities across the world, new forms of poverty. If a young person would like to share their experience or write a witness on one of these themes any contribution would be very welcome. Please send them toechoes@taize.fr

Kiev: An experience of fellowship in Christ

At the end of September, before going to the youth meeting in Helsinki, Brother Alois and two other brothers stayed in the Ukrainian capital for a new step in the Pilgrimage of Trust on Earth. There were visits to many different churches for prayers and workshops. As Brother Alois said during his meditation given during the visit: “For twenty years many young people from your country have made a pilgrimage to Taizé, and I’m happy to be able to come here as on a pilgrimage, so that together we can strengthen our faith in Christ, our trust in God.”

Kigali: The next step in the Pilgrimage of Trust in Africa

The final phase of the preparation for the next African stage of the Pilgrimage of Trust has begun in Rwanda. Brothers of Taizé and two sisters of Saint Andrew have been in Kigali since the beginning of the September to welcome the young adults who make up the coordination team. In all, they number around twenty people from fifteen different nationalities.

Rome: Preparations for the European Meeting

Brothers from Taizé, Sisters of St. Andrew, and young volunteers from different countries have begun visiting the parishes and communities throughout the region of Rome, inviting them to participate in the Pilgrimage of Trust. They come together for daily prayer from Monday until Thursday in a chapel in the Basilica of St. John Lateran. On Friday the prayer takes place at the Basilica of the Holy Cross of Jerusalem and on Saturday they go to a different church each week. This week the Methodists of Rome are hosting the prayer. One of the brothers has been travelling in Italy, visiting groups of young people. The invitation is particularly for the youth of the country to join the Romans as volunteers, in order to welcome the young pilgrims who will come from all over Europe and beyond.
In different countries, the young people are already preparing to participate in the 35th European meeting.

Commentary on a passage from the bible: Becoming Holy Because God is Holy

You shall be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy.” These words from the book of Leviticus are as powerful an invitation as we can find anywhere in the Bible. They are recorded here in order to echo far and wide. God asks Moses to tell them not to a select few but to the entire Israelite community.
But what is this holiness about? First, we note that verse 2 speaks of being holy not “as” God is holy, but “for” or “because” God is holy. The invitation to be holy is not about trying to be like God. We and God are indeed distinct, different.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, open our eyes, so that we may see the gifts given to each one. In this way, supporting each other, we will find joy in the wonderful diversity that comes from you. And communion becomes our praise.
