Easter: "Lets allow ourselves to be led by the joy of the resurrection!"

Before and after Easter more than 6000 pilgrims passed through Taizé. One prominent moment was the washing of the feet on Maundy Thursday, this year extended to all those present, each person having their feet symbolically washed by one of the brothers. On Easter morning the joy of the resurrection brought the brothers and the young people together. Brother Alois spoke about this in his Saturday evening meditation, as well as the entry into the community of a young man from Chad and the life commitment of a brother from the Basque Country.
In the course of the last few weeks we have been running a reflection group on the theme "Towards a New Solidarity", bringing together around 30 young people from various countries. They spent time teasing out the reflection opened by the "Letter 2012-2015" and then prepared and led workshops at the weekend, inviting the rest of the participants, in Taizé that week, to join them.

Brother Alois in Rome and Canterbury

The evening of his election, Brother Alois wrote about Pope Francis: "In Rome, in St. Peter’s Square, in the middle of the huge crowd of Romans and pilgrims from many countries, I was very happy about the first words of Pope Francis. We were expecting something new from this election and it happened. The origin of this first pope, come "from the ends of the earth," expresses the universal dimension of the Church. The name he chose evokes the joy and love of the poor that inspired Francis of Assisi and which, until now, have been at the heart of his life in Argentina."
Brother Alois had the opportunity to greet the pope during an audience with the delegates from other churches and other faiths. He then went directly to Canterbury for the enthronement of the new Archbishop, Justin Welby, who he was able to meet personally for a moment the next day.

Upcoming Meetings: In Asia and on the French-German Border

During the meeting in Rome, Brother Alois announced several new stages in the "Pilgrimage of Trust on Earth": ’If this year has made us particularly attentive to young Africans, the coming year will enable us to listen to young Asians. A few of us, in October and November, will make a pilgrimage of peace and reconciliation to several countries including Korea and India, and we will also make the journey to express our solidarity in places striving for greater justice and freedom.
Then there will be the next European meeting, from 28 December 2013 to 1 January 2014. It will take place on the border between two countries, in a city which is a symbol of reconciliation in Europe, a symbol of an open and united Europe. The European meeting will be held in the city of Strasbourg. We will be welcomed in Alsace on the French side and on the German side in Baden." In preparation for this upcoming meeting there are several information meetings being organised in Baden and in Alsace during the month of May. Details can be found on the website in French and German.

India: Visits to Vasai and Mumbai

In February and March some of the brothers spent several weeks in India. "Many people travel daily from Vasai to the centre of Mumbai in severely overcrowded trains. There are many Christians in Vasai, and Taizé has been in contact with the church there for a long time; Brother Roger visited the city during his first visit to India in 1976. Since then many young people from the city, from different denominations, have spent time in Taizé during the summer months as volunteers, helping with the welcome for the international youth meetings."
