News from Taizé
Taizé : In January the meetings start again in the cold of winter
In these first weeks of 2013, the international meetings have resumed. The largest number of young people in January is from Belgium, and others come from much further away : Korea, Burundi, Botswana, Chile, the United States, Canada.... They are mostly students or young professionals and are using holiday time to start the year at Taizé. Some have had to shift their arrival – because of snowfall.
During these weeks, the prayer of the brothers returns to world events : the conflict in Mali, the rebuilding in Haiti three years after the earthquake, and also the celebration of the Franco-German reconciliation. The feast of Epiphany was celebrated in a special union with the Christians of the East, some of whom were celebrating Christmas at the same time.
From the 18th to the 25th of January, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity took place in many countries : its theme this year was prepared by students from India. In this context, an evening of prayer took place at Taizé, in the church of the Reconciliation, in the presence of the Bishop of Autun, Protestant pastors and the Orthodox priest of the region. A brother who has been living in Bangladesh for thirty years also animated a meeting about the witness of Christians in Asia.
Kigali : The call to reconciliation
After the African Meeting of young people in Kigali, Brother Alois wrote a message for the participants of the European Meeting a message entitled “From Kigali to Rome”. In this text he writes : “What we have brought back from Rwanda is above all the call to reconciliation. The Church wants to contribute to an in-depth reconciliation, not a forced coexistence but a reconciliation of hearts. This is a call for all of us : how can we reconcile what seems to be, and perhaps is, incompatible ? We are not doomed to resignation or passivity, because Christ came to reconcile what seemed to be in permanent opposition.” On the website there are new echoes of this Rwandan stage in the Pilgrimage of Trust, written by young people from different countries who participated in the Meeting.
Rome : A few weeks after the European meeting
The common prayer of 29th December in St Peter’s Square, which brought together 45,000 young Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant Christians together with the Pope, will probably remain the high point of the 35th European Meeting. During the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, Benedict XVI recalled this prayer in the following words : “Very important in this regard was the prayer vigil I celebrated about a month ago in this square with thousands of young people from all over Europe and with the ecumenical community of Taizé : a moment of grace in which we experienced the beauty of forming one in Christ.”
On the website, there are the latest echoes from Rome, together with the meditations of Brother Alois, photographs, andtestimonies written during the meeting by young participants.
Istanbul : The feast of the Epiphany with Patriarch Bartholomew
Immediately after the European Meeting in Rome, Brother Alois, together with several brothers of the community and around one hundred young adults from 25 different countries, went on pilgrimage to Istanbul from January 4-6, 2013. They went to celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany together with Christians of the different Churches of the city and were received in particular by the Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew.
On the website, one of the brothers tells about this pilgrimage ; also, the words of welcome spoken by the patriarch, themeditation by Brother Alois, and photos of key moments.
Prague : Preparation of “Vigils of Trust”
Five years ago in Zlin, three years ago in Brno and last year in Olomouc, some young people prepared a meeting called “Dny důvěry” (Days of Trust). Those week-ends were gatherings of young adults between 17 and 35 years old from all over the Czech Republic. All the participants were welcomed by families of the different parishes and the local church communities. This year too, some of those young adults expressed a desire to continue this “little pilgrimage of trust” in their cities. So in October and November they invited people for Večery důvěry (vigils of Trust) in several big cities of Czech Republic.
