News from Taizé by e-mail
Taizé : in expectation for Christmas
At Taizé, throughout Advent, expectation for Christmas has been growing. From one Sunday to the next, acrib in African style, echoing the meeting in Kigali, has been evolving outside the Church of Reconciliation. On the evening of the 24th, after the Eucharist for Christmas Eve, brothers, volunteers and visitors present will go to sing in the joy of the Nativity beside it.
In recent weeks, in addition to young people from Europe and also South Korea and the United States, a Lebanese delegation has visited Taizé for a weekend, led by Archbishop Gemayel, the new Maronite Bishop in Paris. At the same time, a group of teachers and students of the Ecumenical Institute of Bossey were on the hill for their annual visit. The month of December also saw visits by French and Swiss pastors, including the president of the Reformed Church of France, Laurent Schlumberger.
Rome : in expectation of the European meeting
Friedemann, one of the young volunteers who have been preparing the meeting since September, writes : “For this Advent, our expectation is special because we are also looking forward to the upcoming meeting. It doesn’t matter how far on we are in our preparations, Advent is moving ahead, Christmas is coming, and pilgrims will be arriving soon. Waiting for Christ, in the hope that he is coming to be Emmanuel, God with us, also encourages us to continue our work here.”
Indeed, because of the large number of participants registered, Pope Benedict XVI himself has made a public appeal that reads : “From 28 December to 2 January, the European youth meeting promoted by the Community of Taizé will be held in Rome. I thank the families who, in the Roman tradition of hospitality, have made themselves available to accommodate these young people. Since, thanks to God, the requirements exceed what was expected, I renew the appeal already launched in parishes, that other families, with great simplicity, may make this beautiful experience of Christian friendship.” The preparation team has done everything necessary so that all the participants can be welcomed : there will be accommodation for everyone, but in some cases the conditions will be extremely simple.
In addition, because of the large number of participants, the prayer planned for 29th December in the Basilica of St Peter will take place outside in the square ; Pope Benedict XVI will be present. It is important to bring warm clothes. All the inhabitants of Rome who would like to do so are invited to join the participants of the Meeting.
Rome : important information on the website
For people who are registered for the meeting, it is necessary to read carefully the pages being published on the website, especially the important notice about accommodation, information on the place of arrival 26 December on the place of arrival 28 December and routes for buses to enter the city.
Upon arrival in Rome, the young people will receive a message from Brother Alois, containing four proposals for “Uncovering the Wellsprings of Trust in God,” as well as the detailed programme of the meeting.
It is already possible to read the messages sent to participants by church leaders. Also to be published on the website during the meeting : texts of the evening meditations by Brother Alois, testimonies of young people in Rome day by day, and pictures.
East Timor : a people who dare to trust
In the autumn, one of the brothers visited this country. “As I started to write down the story of these ten days in East Timor, I wondered what has marked me the most, what image I had from my previous visits and especially this last one. Without any doubt, it is that of men and women walking, moving toward a goal.”
Towards a New Solidarity : Prayer for Christmas
A proposal for a prayer vigil is available on the website, as a step on the way “towards a new solidarity” ; it is particularly suited to liturgical season of Christmas.
Prayer
God of all people, you come to us in unexpected ways. Your coming is in a great silence, it overturns our plans and expectations. In the steps of Mary and Joseph, we would like to leap over the walls of hesitation to welcome you, God-with-us.
