News from Taizé
Taizé : Several thousand young people in Taizé over the "All Saints" holidays
During the last two weeks around 6500 people have passed through Taizé, either side of the Feast of All Saints. There were large groups from Sweden, Spain, Italy, Germany and Belgium, but the great majority of the visitors were French. These young people come from every region of France for three successive sessions over the two week holiday period. Brother Alois spoke to them one evening in the Church of Reconciliation:
" We brothers are happy to welcome you and also to welcome those who are accompanying you and who’ve prepared you so well for the stay - your youth leaders and catechists, lay people, priests, pastors and bishops."
He also shared some news from his recent trip to Rome as a special guest taking part in the Synod of Bishops.

Kigali: Echoes from the Meeting
In a few days time the third African Youth Meeting will begin in Kigali, Rwanda. Between 14 and 17 Novemberstories and photographs from the meeting will be put up on our website, as well as a short daily film. Juan from Argentina, who is part of the international preparation team, writes: "A few days ago, in the town of Gahanga, we had the chance to meet a very old lady who lives in a modest house between farms, far away from the main road. Despite her humble living conditions, her difficulty in walking and her waning eyesight, we were deeply moved by her faith and her joy."
Rome: A New Stage in the Pilgrimage of Trust
In countries across Europe, young people are coming together in order to prepare to take part in the Pilgrimage of Trust on Earth in Rome. A group of 200 young people will come from Barcelona by boat! In the city of Rome itself, this weekend, people from all the parishes preparing the meeting will come to the preparation centre to meet with the team of brothers and young volunteers see how things lie. This is an important stage in the organisation of the welcome for the thousands of young pilgrims that will arrive on 28th December from all over Europe.
Helsinki: A Nordic Meeting in September 2012
At the end of September a meeting in Helsinki brought young people together from the whole of Scandinavia, the Baltic countries and further afield. Brother Alois was also present for the meeting organised at the invitation of the Christian Churches of Finland. Following on from the meeting one of the brothers who had been part of the team preparing the meeting asked himself the question: "What is a Nordic Taizé meeting? It really is something that is quite hard to describe!"
Mantova: Brothers and volunteers visit a sorely tried region
Two volunteers from Taizé were in Mantova during May 2012. A few weeks later the region was struck by several earthquakes. Frederik, from The Netherlands and Davide, from Italy, went back to visit the inhabitants of the Mantova region again in October. They were there to take part in a national meeting with two brothers of the community and young people from various regions of Italy, and at the same time to spend several days with those who had lost so much during the earthquake. One of them writes: "Being sent to Mantova gave me the opportunity to see once again the great importance of these meetings: to give people the opportunity to meet and to offer hospitality. There is a great will in people to be together and to meet but they simply do not have the opportunity."
Towards a New Solidarity: "Peace to those who are near"
"Christ came to announce the joyful message of peace: peace to those who are far off, peace to those who are near" (Ep 2:17). Using this verse and extracts from Brother Alois’ letter, young people from different continents share their experiences of solidarity lived out in practice in their immediate setting. Julia, from Germany, writes: "I think that, for me, it’s important to be aware of my environment and the people that I meet there – simply by trying to open and friendly and to take the first step if necessary."
Commented Bible Passage: "Violence of a Pacifist"
"Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. [...] " (Matthew 21:12-17) At the end of Jesus’ earthly existence, Matthew mentions two events in the Temple of Jerusalem, the centre of Israel’s religion. In them, Jesus implicitly criticizes a certain way of placing oneself before God and shows an alternative.
Prayer
God, our peace, we entrust to you all those who see no future, for whom hope fails. Your Holy Spirit makes our prayer even more fervent and we would like to keep watch for those that are no longer able to. Indeed, it is through our prayer, too, that we prepare the way for your coming.
